Flexibility is vital in preventing injuries and improving performance in sports and everyday activities. Increasing flexibility can help decrease muscle soreness, pain, trigger points, and generally make you feel better. It can even improve balance.
Stretching helps increase flexibility by actually lengthening your muscles and increasing your joint’s range of motion (ROM). Each time you are stretched, you gain a little bit more flexibility. Over time, you can gain the cumulative effect of “normal” ROM, which is different for everyone. This is when you are able to function optimally and feel your best. Too much stretching too quickly can actually cause injury, which is why you need to work with someone who is well trained and will listen to your feedback. Stretching should never be painful.
There is no effort on your part. You relax and enjoy your stretch. There are various methods of stretching. The one that usually comes to mind is passive stretching, where a muscle is stretched to a point and then held for 30-60 seconds. Another type of stretching is proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), which is a neuromuscular technique. Various types of techniques can be used depending on which is most effective for the individual.
Assisted Stretching Program
Who can benefit from our stretching program? Stretching is important for everyone of all ages and should be part of any fitness program. But as we age, it becomes even more important because we start losing tissue elasticity and “stiffen up.” Stretching is the answer.
Specific categories of people who benefit includes:
- Athletes (including golfers, tennis & pickleball players)
- People with pain in their shoulders, hips, back, or neck
- Adults who feel “stiff” and have problems with general activities of daily living such as bending over, turning their head while driving, reaching, and balance
- People with certain medical conditions such as Parkinsons
